GOLFER’S
DREAM COME TRUE - Two lucky people will experience a
golfer’s paradise in New Zealand with two days and
nights at each of Julian Robertson’s three ***** luxury
resorts – Kauri Cliffs, Cape Kidnappers and Matakauri
Lodge. Airfare included.
Financier Julian
Robertson and his Tiger Management have long been
renowned as great investors. Julian’s judgment in
picking sites for golf isn’t bad either. In 1995 he
bought 3,000 coastal acres on the northern tip of New
Zealand’s North Island overlooking the Bay of Islands “for the price of
a modest New York apartment”.
When the David Harman-designed Kauri Cliffs opened in
2000, it became an instant must play. Fifteen holes have
views of the Pacific and six play alongside the cliffs.
It has just been rated no. 18 in the world in golf
course rankings.
As good as Kauri
Cliffs is, Robertson managed to top himself when his
second course, Cape
Kidnappers, about 300 miles to the south, opened four years later. Tom Doak
sculpted a dramatic design, with some holes set atop
fingers of land that jut out high above the Pacific.
Cape
Kidnappers golf course is currently ranked the 41st best golf course in the world
by US Golf Magazine.
And, in 2010,
Robertson and his family added the equally outstanding
Matakauri Lodge, Queenstown, to their suite of five-star
luxury resorts. Known for its breathtaking beauty and
abundance of water sports, Matakauri Lodge will provide
a perfect ending to your New Zealand adventure.
It has been very
important to Julian, in all of his endeavors, to enhance
the environment. More than 300 kauri trees have been
planted - a type of native tree that has played a big
part in the history of the Northland area, once a gum
diggers’ paradise. A 1300 year old kauri that sits on
Robertson’s land has been gifted to a trust by
Robertson, to ensure its preservation. Native birds
abound, and there are even kiwi living on the land that
Robertson is determined to protect.
A review from Trip
Advisor follows: I had the great pleasure of visiting
all three of the amazing lodges in the Robertson group
as part of the magical nine day
New Zealand
Experience...the gorgeous lodges of Kauri Cliffs, Cape
Kidnappers and Matakauri. All
very unique, each with a different feel, with one
unifying theme called excellence. If you are thinking of
NZ and want to do it right, this is the way to go!
Although, be warned, you will probably want to extend
your stay, so get an open ended ticket. The golf courses
at Kauri Cliffs and "The Cape" are a golfers
dream...just spectacular with views to match. The staff,
the food, the service, the accommodations, the spas all
as good as I have ever experienced. You immediately felt
like you were at home! Everyone was always so
accommodating and no request went unfulfilled. The
culinary team(s) can handle any request... Don't forget
to visit the 900 year old Kauri Tree at Kauri Cliffs, or
visit the Gannet colony at the Cape, or do the
helicopter tour of Queenstown at Matakauri....just for
starters. There are so many things to do, even if you
are not a golfer! I will be back, but next time for
longer. Nine days is just not enough.
